MRI’s for back pain can confuse back pain sufferers and their practitioners

A large percentage of back pain sufferers advise that they have complete relief from their pain when they lie flat on their stomach. So, what is causing your back pain?

MRI’s scans carried out on chronic back pain sufferers come with reports loaded with medical reasons why you have pain. Some of the most common items found on an MRI scan include:

  • Spinal stenosis
  • Disc degeneration
  • Disc protrusion
  • Annular tear
  • Spondylosis
  • Loss of disc height
  • Foraminal narrowing
  • Minimal bulge
  • Facet arthropathy
  • Facet effusion

Most can be linked anatomically/pathologically correct ways of explaining that you have wear and tear to your lumbar spine structures. But are these the reasons why you have pain? And if so, why does your pain go away when you are lying flat on your stomach with certain patients?

Back-pain can be caused by muscles and fascia not wear and tear to the spine and its discs. Wear and tear are a natural part of the ageing process and the majority of older people regardless of whether they suffer from back pain or not have MRI scans showing it. Up to 40% of adults have herniated discs, up to 70% of adults have a or multiple degenerated discs without any pain.

MRI reports can be a distraction to the real source of pain, as effective as they can be.  We’ve found lower back pain sufferers can eradicate their pain if they focus on the true underlying cause of their pain and not just the symptoms (i.e. what shows on their MRI report).

Postural imbalances caused by both muscular weakness and tension compromise the lower back structures when in an upright position. Effectively the back-pain sufferer is not strong enough in the muscles that support their back to carry the weight of their own structure. Remove gravity, by laying down on their stomach and all of a sudden, their pain can completely go away.

Address the true underlying cause of your back pain by strengthening the major muscles that support the weight of your body when upright. Eradicate the tension to the muscles that have been overworked due to compensating for the weakness and you may just find a lasting solution to your pain.

The reason why so many people who show wear and tear on MRI’s, but do not have lower back pain is because their bodies are strong enough and symmetrical enough to support the weight of their structure and their lower back.
